What Are Genital Warts?

Genital Warts are only small, but they cause big problems. They occur in the genital region and are quite soft, resulting from the human papilloma virus (HPV). There are over a hundred various types of HPV which cause the warts. Most of us have had warts on our fingers and these are also caused by HPV.

Thankfully, only a small number of the many HPVs are known to cause genital warts.

How do we get genital warts? They are transmitted by sexual contact. This means that the virus is contracted by having sex or intimate relations with a partner who is carrying the virus. The HPV passes through tiny openings in the skin that occur in the genital areas during sex.

Once the virus is passed on, a wart appears often in 10 or 12 weeks, although sometimes they may lie dormant for years. People with the virus who have dormant warts can still transmit the virus,

Condoms are helpful in preventing the spread of genital warts, however they are not foolproof and may not cover the full area of skin making contact.

Genital warts are usually flat, papular, or pedunculated growths on the genital region. Diagnosis of genital warts is made by visual inspection and may be confirmed by biopsy, although biopsy is needed only under circumstances where the diagnosis is uncertain.

Women are sometimes diagnosed with genital warts following a pap smear test.

In some cases, people may suffer itching pain around the genital openings, even if there are no warts present while many others have no recognizable symptoms and consequently may not know they are infected.

The discomfort and itchiness associated with genital warts can be relieved by keeping the affected area dry.

Saline washes and creams provide some relief.

At present, there are no treatments that can stop the virus, but there are several treatments for the warts themselves including freezing them with liquid nitrogen. A chemical paint application is another common treatment.

Creams are less harsh than the chemical paints and are ofter used when a large amount of warts are present. Hot wires are also used to burn the warts.

In all instances, take heed of the advice from your doctor and note that the warts have a habit of returning even long after they may have appeared to have cleared up.
