Beechworth is an elegant 19th century town in country Victoria, Australia. It has become a popular tourist destination thanks to a mix of history and some great culinary and gourmet expeditions that can be enjoyed close to town. One of the top local stops for a bite to eat is the Beechworth bakery, which is famous all around Australia. There has been a bakery on site since 1857, but today it is run by inimitable Tom O’Toole who has turned it into the uber-bakery with some of the best baked products available anywhere seven days a week.
Other local foods and produce that food lovers can sample include mustards, honey, fresh fruit from the many orchards and olives. Many of these local foods are used proudly in the local restaurants dishes and seasonal menus, which provides unique flavors that attract food lovers time and time again.
There are plenty of activities to do in and around town that will have adults and kids alike fascinated. Many of the activities are also educational teaching visitors about Australian history, geology and biology. Since this is a gold rush town, gold panning is still available and you can try your luck at Sebastopol Park. This is the site where real gold fossickers from around the world hunted for gold. Australian legend and bushranger Ned Kelly also spent some time here trying to escape the police.
In the historical precinct of town, there are many different buildings that offer an insight into life in a gold mining town in the 19th century. Some of the buildings that can be visited on a historical ticket over two days include: police stables and lock up, the town hall, Robert O’Hara museum, Courthouse, Telegraph Station, Gold Warden’s Office, Chinese Protectors Office and Gold Office.
In addition to all the dining and historical activities you can strap on your hiking boots and get out to explore the hills around Beechworth. These are some of the best hiking trails that show off the best of the Australian bush. Trails around town also take you past various historically important sites.
