When an advertisement is viewed, the goal is for it to make sense. At least that should be the goal. Most often, ad executives think that if they produce something that is thought provoking, it will force the audience to remember their advertisement.
There are some quick techniques to use when writing that will help you be successful, even if you’re not the best writer in town.
How many business articles have been torn out of newspapers that end up appearing on The Tonight Show? Sure, Conan may not do the headline’s segment like Jay Leno, but people will still be out there ridiculing your work. It is never fun to be the victim of poor proofreading. While trusting the spell check on your computer can be wise, it is not to fully be dependent on.
It will correct words that are spelled wrong, but fails to point out when words are spelled right and used incorrectly. If a sentence reads, “Justin will not no the results until tomorrow,” spell check will assume the sentence is written properly. Other programs, such as free online grammar checkers, are much more reliable when it comes to proper word usage.
To check and double check spelling, it is a good idea to have someone else proofread your business articles or advertisements. The old saying goes, “Two Heads are better than one!”
Use strong verbiage when needed but eliminate words that you don’t necessarily need. You’ll quickly develop a sense of style that will become your own.
After the document has been proofread by one or two other people, read the document again. This time read your work out loud. Make sure the sentence structure makes sense and that commas are placed where you would normally take a pause in conversation.
They will also offer great advice if something doesn’t make sense, or just doesn’t sound quite right. Apply SHOPP, welcome second opinions and have fun writing!
